Consider this: You're a convicted child molester. You sexually assaulted two young girls and spent many years in jail for you crime. While a free man, you come across a lottery to benefit STAR (Standing Together Against Rape), an organization in Alaska that helps victims of sexual assault, child abuse, and incest. Do you buy a ticket? Alec Ahsoak did. And, he won. $500,000.
You can imagine the outrage in the community after hearing about Alec's win. It's ironic, isn't it? However, he did win and he did get the money.
But that's not the end of the story. In January of 2009, Brandon Hughes, a 20 year old California man, was temporarily in Anchorage, Alaska, when he spotted Alec Ahsoak coming out of a bank. He went up to him, and asked if he was that lottery winner. Alec replied that he was. Then, Brandon beat him with a tire iron. Alec was treated in hospital and survived. But he may not have if a passerby didn't stop the fight. It is not known yet what Brandon's motivation for the attack was.
