On Friday February 21st, 2009, Lotto 6/49 jackpot was estimated at $48 million. When all ticket sales were completed and tabulated, the jackpot soared to $50 million, making it Canada's second biggest lottery jackpot ever. There were four winning tickets sold, worth approximately $12.5 million each.
Earle Smith (pictured left) was the first person to claim his share of the prize. And, he gave half of it to his son-in-law, Deon Goobie. Earle is a 53 year old crab fisherman from Clarenville, Newfoundland. When picking up his check, he said that he was now officially retired. Deon, however, plans to keep working at his job with Ontario Power Generation. But not before buying the car of his dreams, a Lamborghini!
Earle, from Newfoundland, was visiting his daughter and son-in-law in Courtice, Ontario (A town just east of Toronto), when they decided to buy some lottery tickets. They both spent $11. And, now they are millionaires!
Deon came home from the night shift on Sunday morning and just fell asleep when his father-in-law, Earle woke him with the big news that he won the lottery. He remembers it as if it was a dream because he was still half asleep! He got up and they checked the numbers on the computer. It wasn't a dream. The ticket was a winner!
