Imagine buying an instant scratch lottery ticket and finding out that it is a jackpot winner. That would feel awesome! Then imagine trying to cash it, only to be told that it is not a winner but, rather, a misprinted ticket. That would be quite unlucky... or maybe not.
It happened to Thomas Noftall. He thought he had won $135,000 on an instant scratch lottery ticket. But he wasn't so lucky. The ticket was a printing error. OLG (Ontario Lottery And Gaming) realized the mistake and recalled the batch of tickets that were misprinted. But that wasn't good enough for Thomas. He hired a lawyer.
His lawyer was able to get Thomas an undisclosed settlement and an apology. An apology? NICE!!! Actually, we're more interested in the settlement. However, nobody knows what the settlement was, other than Thomas, his lawyer, OLG lottery officials, and six flies that happened to be on the wall at the time of negotiations. Too bad. We'll never know.
But Thomas Noftall gets cash despite buying a losing lottery ticket. He does have a good formula for getting cash, though: Buy losing lottery ticket; get lawyer; get money!
