Steve West And Bob Chaney are Powerball winners. The Medford, Oregon residents and friends won a $340 million Powerball jackpot in October of 2005 (That's Steve in the picture, smiling, and Bob in the wheelchair, surrounded by their wives and families). You'd expect such a jackpot to lead to a lavish life. But that's not the case for these two. They're more concerned about helping others.
Sure, they bought a few big ticket items, like new houses within a mile of eachother and a few new cars. And, they've taken a few trips to Italy, Switzerland, and Hawaii. But their lives after Powerball were all about helping others because they had, previously, been in financial difficulties and they know what it feels like. They set up charitable foundations to do that.
Steve West created The West Family Foundation with $10 million in seed money. The Foundation had an aim to help local children and other worthy causes. It donated to things like high schools in Medford and social service groups. Chaneys' Foundation will give to groups like veterans' causes because he was a Korean-war-vet, as well as public safety and faith-based organizations.
It's great to hear stories of people like Steve West and Bob Chaney winning the lottery. It couldn't have happened to better people.
On a side note, Bob Chaney had since passed away from a brain injury suffered during a fall.
