There are many people that say that lotteries are wrong because they consider it to be a tax on the stupid and poor. They have now been proven wrong by Dr. Peivand Pirouzi. More on that in a minute.
Dr. Peivand Pirouzi won the second prize, $292,297, on the May 20, 2009 Lotto 6/49 draw. That was the same draw that Japanese-Canadian lottery winner, Kanji Onoda, also won the second prize on. They both matched 5-out-of-6 numbers plus the bonus number.
Dr. Pirouzi was checking his lottery tickets at the computer when he found out that he won and said that it was a great surprise. He said that he planned to use the winnings to invest in property and, also, take a vacation.
Back to lotteries being a tax on the stupid and poor. A study by Carnegie Mellon University researchers found that people who feel poor are more likely to play the lottery than people who are well off, meaning that lotteries tend to be a regressive tax (That's the opposite of a 'progressive tax' where the more a person makes, the more that person is taxed). When a person is poor, he often sees winning the lottery as their only way out of their poor lifestyle. This is quite stupid as the odds of winning the lottery are astronomical. They'd be better off saving their lottery money and investing it.
So, now, we have a doctor winning the lottery. Peivand Pirouzi is a Master of Science (M.Sc.), a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD), and a Master of Business Administration (MBA). The 44-year-old man from Richmond Hill, Ontario Canada is not a stupid man. A stupid man cannot be well educated. Dr. Pirouzi is a smart man. And, he plays the lottery. Does that mean that the theory that the lottery is a tax on the stupid and poor has been proven wrong? Maybe, maybe not. This is by no means a scientific study, just a blog post. It may just mean that smart people play the lottery too. But I do believe that the people who could least afford to play the lottery should never spend more than a couple of dollars a month gambling on the lottery.
