Usually people play the cash for life type of games where you win $1000 a week for the rest of your life because that $1000 every week is appealing to them. They might consider it an extra paycheck or even just quit their job and live off of it. For that reason, it's very rare that someone opts for a lump-sum payment instead, but Phylis Edgar did. She chose a lump sum payment of $675,000 instead of a $1000 per week paycheck.
More on Phylis in a bit. But first, I've always found this quite strange and it's probably the reason that not many people even pay attention to lottery odds. The cash for life type of games usually have better odds than most other lottery games; it's usually about 1-in-1.3-million for the $1000 per week games and usually has an option of a $675,000 lump-sum. Take, for example, Lottario lottery in Ontario, Canada. The odds of winning on a single ticket is approximately 1-in-4-million, but the jackpot is usually just $250,000. Lottario tickets cost $1 and the cash for life game, PayDay, costs $2. Even after taking the price difference into account, PayDay has better odds. So, why do people put down money on Lottario when PayDay is better in Ontario? I'm sure they don't even pay attention to odds.
Back to Phylis Edgar. She was so excited that she won that she didn't even sleep. She waited all night for the first ferry to take her to mainland BC to claim her prize. That first ferry left at 5am. That's how excited she was!
Phylis Edgar plans to use the money to pay off bills, get a new car, and go on a vacation!
