Stephen Newton Survived Avalanche That Killed Four Friends Then Won The Lottery

Stephen Newton - Avalanche Survivor

Frane Selak isn't the only person that had a bout of bad luck and then went on to win the lottery. Stephen Newton did too. He and his family just won £8 million ($13,132,485 USD) in the National Lottery, but he has had a brush with danger in the past.

On December 12, 1998, Stephen Newton was mountain climbing with his friends in Scotland when an avalanche suddenly buried them. He says that they just couldn't move. He and his girlfriend spent 15 hours trapped. They were rescued and survived. However, four of his friends were not so lucky and perished that day. He will remember his friends, Emma Ray, Paul Hopkins, Matthew Lewis, and Ian Edwards by donating some of his windfall to mountain rescue services.

The winning ticket was a Lucky Dip ticket (Equivalent to a quick pick) and was bought at Costcutter store. The family is overjoyed by the win.
