I don't know how things like this can happen because I, as I assume most people do, check my lottery tickets the day after the draw. Not William H Greer, though. He must stash them somewhere and forgot about them because he cashed in a $200,000 Powerball ticket on the very day it was set to expire.
William H Greer is from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. PA Lottery allows one year for winning tickets to be cashed. William bought a Powerball ticket for the June 18, 2008 draw. He cashed it in on June 18, 2009.
William H Greer's mother saw on the news that someone had bought a winning Powerball ticket at Choi Food & Beer in Philadelphia that was about to expire and she knew that her son buys tickets there. So she asked William to check his old tickets. William did just that, found the winner, and cashed it in just in time.
Wouldn't it suck if William checked his ticket one day too late and it had already expired?
Let that be a lesson to you, folks: Check your lottery tickets right away; you just never know.
