Did you ever think that you could win the lottery at an NHL hockey game? Well, Illinois Lottery tested a new promotion to give away $1 million to a lucky fan at a Chicago Blackhawks hockey game in 2009. And, Cary Stolarczyk won it.
Cary Stolarczyk won $1 million on January 19, 2009.
The way the promotion worked was like this: Starting on January the 14th, 2009, Illinois Lottery chose a random seat before each Chicago Blackhawks game. Then, if a Blackhawk scored a goal at exactly the 10 minute mark of the second period, the person in that seat would win the million dollars. It took just five days for the prize to be awarded.
Cary Stolarczyk sure was happy that Martin Havlat scored a goal at exactly the right time on exactly the right game. Cary said when he realized what had happened, he was so happy that he was cursing and he was glad his mother wasn't there to hear that.
Now, what do you think the odds of getting a goal in a specific second in an NHL hockey game. Quite astronomical, right? After all, lotteries are designed to be difficult to win. Nope. The odds of scoring a goal on any given second are just 1-in-1000. Those are pretty good odds and maybe that's why it didn't take long at all for there to be a winner.
