Take a look at the photo of the woman on the left. That's Angela Kelly. The photo was taken just months after she became Britain's biggest lottery winner in August of 2007 by winning a Euromillions jackpot of £35 million ($57,936,449 USD). She looks unkept and sad. Not what you'd expect from such a big lottery winner, right? Yes, that's because winning the lottery might have been a curse on her.
This is the sad but true lottery story of Angela Kelly.
This didn't start out as a sad story. The opposite in fact. Angela believed that winning the lottery was a dream come true. She was having a ball and embraced the media when it happened in August of 2007. She planned many things with her new found wealth, including vacations to Canada and Hawaii. In her own words, she was 'flabbergasted.'
But it didn't take long for life to be turned upside down. Angela Kelly became a recluse and isolated. The story takes a turn when the life she always knew was over. She was used to working hard to make ends meet and suddenly that stopped. She enjoyed gossiping with the adult company at work and that was no more. She was a single-mother working to raise her son. Her son was her life. But once her son's wishes of a Playstation and a few other trinkits were fulfilled, he just wanted to go back to his normal life. He didn't want to move to a new fancy house in a new area either. So, they kept living in the poor neighborhood they always lived in.
But they never really fit in with their old lifestyle. They were rich everybody else was not. They didn't fit in. And, Angela withdrew from society.
It's a sad story. Even when she won the lottery, a friend said of her that Angela Kelly wasn't cut out for this sort of money. That was a true foretelling of Angela's sad troubles to come.
